I spoke too soon …

18th September 2003

Although the Apple and OS X experience has been smooth sailing so far, a few problems with margins finally did crop up yesterday when my wife tried to print an old Word document that she created on a Windows machine. This is nothing major, mind you and indeed I am very happy this is all that happened, even though we moved from a Windows machine on an Intel processor to a Mac OSX machine on a PPC G4! That is quite a major architecture change and the only problem is margins? I think that hardly counts. Maybe some really complex documents might have some problems, but we don’t have any of those ;-) 99% of documents will be fine. We’ve moved our whole office to iMacs and OS X along with all of the Word documents and no-one is complaining at all about anything.

You really must think about that. Previously a lot of people I know hated their computers, they were crashing several times per day and needed constant rebooting. They were a plague, catching and helping to spread viruses. They were just a hassle to use and keep updated and reliable, really. Life is just so much easier with the iMacs. After a while of using the machine, everybody seems to be happy with them, they don’t crash and just keep going until the end of the day when they need to be shutdown. There is a learning curve in OSX, but once you’re past that you’ll be OK.

Hilarious!

17th September 2003

I know I haven’t posted for a while, and I should, but I just wanted to post this today, it’s hilarous!

In other news we just bought a new Dual 1.25 Ghz PowerMac and love it! It just works with all the peripherals I’ve got at home and it’s unix underneath so I’ve got plenty to play with :-) The only problem I see with it so far is the fan noise, which is much lower than my 1.4 Ghz Athlon which was a really loud monster, but for some reason I’m finding it harder to accept this much lower sound level. I guess since I’ve replaced my old Athlon’s fans so many times and it was so noisy that I’m hoping this will be quieter. But it’s a dual processor machine, and it definitely needs the fans so I’ll have to learn to live with it … I was thinking about getting a new powerbook instead but Apple have only recently introduced new models of 1.25 Ghz and a G4 processor which I don’t think is powerful enough (for me, anyway, especially with the G5s just out). I’ll wait until they put a G5 (or something like it) in a powerbook.
